Janesville Craig High School girl’s basketball team shuts down following close contact with positive COVID-19 case

JANESVILLE, Wis. — The Janesville Craig High School girl’s basketball team has been temporarily shut down due to COVID-19.

The team was notified an opponent recently tested positive for the virus, according to coach Kerry Storbakken.

No one on the Janesville Crag team has tested positive, Storbakken said. The team was shut down since they were in close contact to a positive case. It is up to each player’s family to decide whether or not to get tested for COVID.

The team is able to resume activities Wednesday and will miss three games in between now and then.

Janesville Craig was scheduled to play Reedsburg on Thursday, Beaver Dam on Saturday and Watertown on Tuesday.

The team’s next game is scheduled for Dec. 28.

Storbakken said players are doing everything they can to be safe and this is something out of their control.

The School District of Janesville made the decision to allow winter sports at a school board meeting in November. The decision was made as Rock County public health officials moved the county back into phase one of its COVID-19 reopening plan. While this prompted SDJ to pivot the middle and high school levels to all-virtual learning, athletics were given the green light to move forward as scheduled.

Per WIAA guidelines, if a player on any team tests positive for COVID-19, the team would be shut down for two weeks and unable to compete for three.
